Annvix 3.0-RELEASE (Freya) now available
Annvix 3.0-RELEASE (Freya) is now available!
Today marks the fifth public release of the Annvix Linux distribution. February 4th, 2007 marked the release of 2.0-RELEASE; this version is the fruit of almost a year’s worth of hard work. We believe that 3.0-RELEASE is the best version of Annvix available. It is recommended that everyone using 2.0-RELEASE upgrade, as it is no longer supported.
Some of the new features you can find in 3.0-RELEASE include:
- 2.6.22.15 kernel with AppArmor support (RSBAC is no longer supported)
- updated services including PHP 5.2.5, MySQL 5.0.51, PostgreSQL 8.2.5, Apache 2.2.6, and Samba 3.0.28
- many other upgraded system packages, including Glibc 2.6.1
Version 3.0-RELEASE can be downloaded from the mirror sites listed at:

Very nice to hear! Please let me know what you think… we don’t get much feedback and the more feedback we get the better. Especially from a first-time user, it would be fantastic to get your opinion of the distro as a whole and the installation process.

Here from Portugal too.
Saw the distrowatch today and the text about your secure mandriva linux.
I love Mandriva, but i always need a secure server thats why i install SELinux on it later with role based security and others.
Seems like a fine distro and, like Gil, i will give it a try.
Have a good 2008, full of joy, peace, love, and linux achievements

Hello to portugal again! =)
Thanks for the kind wishes, and I hope you have a good 2008 as well!
Annvix doesn’t have SELinux (I like AppArmor better), but I think you’ll find it is quite secure. Please let me know what your thoughts on it are!

I have been using Mandriva for about 4 years now for servers (been a club member that long as well). This is the first time I have heard of Annvix.
AppArmor sounds interesting, but I’ve never had a chance to check it out. I always liked Mandrake / Mandriva for msec and urpmi.
Downloading now.

Please let me know what you think. We changed from urpmi to apt about a year or so ago… apt is much lighter on the system (even if a little lighter on the features… I miss stuff like urpmq and urpmf, for instance). msec is ok, but we think rsec is better (i.e. msec without permission changes and security levels).
I’d love to hear what you think of Annvix once you have a chance to play with it. As you’ve said, in 4 years of using Mandriva (which is how long Annvix has been around as well), you’ve never heard of it so our userbase is quite small, which means I don’t get as much feedback as I’d like, so any feedback you can provide (good or bad!) would be appreciated.

Seems your MD5SUMS file indicates SHA1 hash, but the hash shown matches the result I get for MD5.
So I think I’ve got a good download.
I’m looking forward to trying this out, as I’m a long-time TSL (Trustix) user sad at the demise of that fine distro. I am really interested in small footprint Linuxes, esp ones that can be run on older hardware.
Thanks and best wishes,
Dr. David

No, what you’re seeing is the gpg signature. The md5sums are essentially worthless in and of themselves to the md5sums are gpg signed to ensure integrity. I suppose I could have created a detached gpg signature for the iso itself, but I figure more people use md5 and the paranoid can use gpg to verify the md5sum. =)

I’m like a few of these other guys here. I’m downloading as I write this. Sounds like an awesome distro. Can’t wait to try it out. I’m running a home server to assist me in learning network security, and PHP, PERL, MYSQL, etc etc… This should take me a long ways in that goal.

I come across this nice (so it seems) distribution only today.
I’m burning the i586 ISO as I write this and I will definitely try it. My Linux needs are mainly focused towards the server scene, so my interest on it.
Thanks and a Happy 2008.
